Emergency contraception (EC) is available in the Czech Republic: LNG, UPA and the use of IUD for EC are included in national policies for family planning, and local pharmacies distribute EC, although EC is not reimbursed or covered by social security.

Accessibility & prescription status
Since December 2011, LNG EC is available from pharmacies for women who are 17 years old or older, without a prescription. For women who are 16 years old or younger, LNG EC is only available with a prescription. Since April 2015, UPA EC can also be purchased from pharmacies and a prescription is no longer necessary. The Yuzpe regimen can only be obtained with a prescription from hospitals.
Physicians are the sole health care professionals who are authorized to provide EC.

Guidelines & common practices
Moderní gynekologie a porodnictví, volum 16, číslo 1, published in 2007, is the Czech Republic’s guidelines exclusively devoted to EC. These guidelines include recommendations on LNG EC and the use of IUD for EC.
Health care providers sometimes provide general information about EC during regular consultations but rarely prescribe EC in advance of need. Health care providers also do not require a pregnancy test or a pelvic exam before prescribing EC.
