Accessibility & prescription status

In Belarus, LNG EC is available behind the counter from pharmacies, which means that EC is available without a prescription but is not on the shelves and needs to be requested in order to purchase. UPA EC and the Yuzpe method can only be purchased with a prescription from pharmacies.

Physicians are the sole health care professionals who are authorized to prescribe UPA EC, while physicians, midwives, nurses, pharmacists, and internet prescribers can prescribe or provide LNG EC.

Guidelines & common practices

Belarus uses the July 2012 WHO Fact Sheet Nº 244 on emergency contraception as guidelines for EC. This reference includes recommendations on LNG EC pills as well as on the use of IUD for EC.

Health care providers sometimes provide general information about EC during regular consultations but never prescribe EC in advance of need. Health care providers do not require a pregnancy test or a pelvic exam before prescribing EC.
