UK: CoSRH calls for emergency contraception to be available beyond pharmacies

July 2026. A new YouGov survey highlights persistent barriers to timely access to emergency contraception (EC) in the United Kingdom (UK), particularly outside regular pharmacy opening hours. Many respondents considered obtaining EC on a Sunday or after 10 p.m. to be difficult.

Despite important progress in improving access to EC in the UK, the survey suggests that many people still face challenges obtaining it when time is of the essence.

In response, the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) is calling for oral emergency contraception to be made available through general retail outlets, such as supermarkets and convenience stores, in addition to pharmacies. Expanding points of access, the organisation argues, would help ensure that people can obtain EC quickly, regardless of the day or time.
