Germany: Price of EC pills
January 2026. A new nationwide German study examined the pricing of emergency contraceptive (EC) pills in community pharmacies. Using a mystery caller methodology, 392 randomly selected pharmacies were asked about EC availability and prices. The study found substantial price variation, particularly for ulipristal acetate (UPA). Prices for UPA ranged from €17.00 to €43.71, while levonorgestrel (LNG) prices ranged from €13.99 to €26.72. The study concludes that wide price differences—especially for UPA—may pose a barrier to timely and equitable access to EC pills. To ECEC’s knowledge, this is the first national study in Europe to systematically assess EC pricing in community pharmacies.
