UK Clinical Guideline on Emergency Contraception Updated

June 2026. In the United Kingdom, The College of Sexual & Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) – formerly FSRH-, has updated its Clinical Guideline on Emergency Contraception.

One change in the latest amendments (April 2026) concerns breastfeeding after use of ulipristal acetate (UPA) emergency contraception. Following a review of the available evidence, the College now advises that breastfeeding does not need to be interrupted after a single dose of UPA-EC. This replaces earlier guidance that recommended expressing and discarding breast milk for one week after treatment.

The guideline, originally published in March 2017 and subsequently amended in July 2023 and April 2026, is available from the College’s website. Page 1 conveniently includes a summary of changes made in each amendment.
