June 2025. The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) has released a new statement from its International Medical Advisory Panel (IMAP) on recent advances in emergency contraception (EC). The statement reviews emerging data on several EC-related topics and offers key recommendations to improve access. These include:

  • Encouraging the use of EC pills up to three hours before intercourse for individuals anticipating unprotected sex
  • De-stigmatizing repeated or planned use of EC
  • Supporting and advocating for continued research into effective on-demand pericoital contraceptive methods
  • Including low-dose mifepristone (10–25 mg) in global EC guidelines
  • Integrating EC widely into sexual and reproductive health services and programs
  • Advocating to reduce barriers to EC access and for advance provision of EC pills
