Updated recommendation on LNG dosages and higher BMI and weights

June 2022. Our sister organization, the American Society for Emergency Contraception (ASEC), just updated its factsheet on EC efficacy and body weight, an excellent summary of the current understanding and recommendations on this issue. This update is based on the publication by Dr. Alison Edelman and team of “Double Dosing Levonorgestrel-Based Emergency Contraception for Individuals With Obesity: A Randomized Controlled Trial” (Obstet Gynecol. 2022 Jul 1;140(1):48-54.). The research concludes that “Individuals with higher BMIs and weights experience a higher risk of failure of emergency contraception with LNG and exhibit an altered pharmacokinetic profile. However, the simple strategy of doubling the dose does not appear to be an effective intervention to improve outcomes.”
