New report highlights global inequities in access to Emergency Contraceptive pills

January 2026. The European Consortium for Emergency Contraception (ECEC) reveals significant disparities in the availability and pricing of emergency contraceptive (EC) pills worldwide. The report Emergency contraceptive pills database – Data summary as of November 2025 is based on data from 127 countries, stored on the open-access database.

Levonorgestrel (LNG) pills dominate the market, available in 91% of countries, while ulipristal acetate (UPA) pills are concentrated in high-income nations, accessible in only 48% of countries. Mifepristone pills are currently only available in China and Vietnam.

The analysis highlights stark inequities, with low-income countries facing limited access to UPA pills, which are priced significantly higher than LNG pills. The report calls for improved transparency and data-driven policies to address these gaps globally.
